Red Card volunteers at the All Ireland

On All Ireland Sunday,Show Racism the Red Card aimed to distribute 25,000 A6 postcards to Kerry and Cork supporters outside Croke Park.

We had plenty of volunteers but that matchday rush means that we didn't distribute them all. So you can arrange a supply of top quality A6 size posters with the Red Card on one side and county players on the other.

The campaign came during a week when there was an allegation of racial abuse made in Meath. During a minor hurling game, it is claimed that two black players were subjected to racial abuse, with one of the players reacting in a physical manner which led him to be sent off.

The Trim club brought the issue to light at a Hurling Promotion and Development Committee meeting last week with club delegate CJ Murtagh incensed at the abuse.

“It’s the first time that we have come across this and we believe that unless something is done about the problem now more incidents like this will follow,” said Murtagh. “As hurling people we need to be in the front line in dealing with this problem which will get worse and clubs need to be notified, they need to know what is going on to deal with the issue. Some initiative needs to be taken and it has to come from the top.”

The Show Racism the Red Card posters can be displayed prominently in clubs, community centres, schools, workplaces and elsewhere to help demonstrate where the majority of people stand in relation to this issue.

Tshirts were kindly produced and presented by O'Neills sports.

We were told that there was no way Kerry fans would hold up something that is Red. Our picture shows this is not the case!

Thank you to those who supported Show Racism the Red Card so far

The following are sports stars who have supported by their attendance at Show Racism the Red Card events or by their participation in the forthcoming DVD we are producing.

We have completed filming our educational DVD and look forward to a big launch soon. To date Show Racism the Red Card has launched at Bohemians, Bray Wanderers, Cork, Galway, Sligo, UCD, Cobh, Basketball Ireland and with the GPA.

Forthcoming we have club affiliation events at Dundalk, Longford and Derry City FC and are also working on some interesting work with Basketball Ireland's Women's Superleague.

We have worked with other organisations to promote intercultural events such as the Cork World Cup, the Polish Dublin V Polish Cork match, the League of Nations World Cup. We have visited schools with clubs and clubs have visited schools on our behalf.

We are currently working on a number of exciting collaborative projects including an Intercultural Day at Oliver Plunkett's NS in Navan with Drogheda United. We met with the Ambassador of Lesotho and Eagleswing Youth Initiative (team with 15 nationalities) with a view to organising activity on Africa day May 25th 2008. We are also a founding member of the Irish Chinese Sport and Culture Association, established to promote mutual understanding between Chinese and non-Chinese living in Ireland and are planning to support a Table Tennis festival at Chinese new year. We are also exploring with the GPA and Dublin City Council a pilot initiative aimed at promoting GAA to immigrants in Ireland.

Guests at the event included Irish 400m record holder Joanne Cuddihy and
Irish Volleyball international Noemi Kuncik, Dublin GAA legend Brian Mullins alongside UCD FC's Tim Purcell and Evan Mc Millan.

Schools included Jobstown Community School, Sallynoggin Community School and High School and the Muslim National School.

Cllr Denis O'Callaghan, Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council
formally launched UCD FC's Show Racism the Red Card Campaign on Thursday 13 September.

"Thousands of people are making Dun Laoghaire their new home. With
intercultural understanding we all stand to benefit from this," said
O'Callaghan. "It is highly apt that UCD is leading this initiative as it is
the leading football club in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown."

"Ireland is getting more multicultural all the time. Initiatives like this
at school level help because people growing up won't be afraid of other
races" said Joanne Cuddihy.

Kuncik, who originally hails from Romania, said multiculturalism aided Irish
sport. "Volleyball in Ireland is very multicultural. We count on people from other
countries to come and help us improve the sport".

UCD FC sign up to UEFA 10 point plan

UCD FC also used the occasion to launch its new kids jersey which features the Show Racism the Red Card logo. UCD Club Promotion Officer, Colin Forde said: "We're the first senior club in Europe to replace a sponsor's logo with an anti-racism message".
